Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a Country Lecture Series (CLS) titled Strengthening Ties: A Forward Look Between Bangladesh and Italy at BIISS auditorium. H E Antonio Alessandro, Ambassador of Italy to Bangladesh, graced the programme as Guest Speaker. Major General Iftekhar Anis, BSP, awc, afwc, psc, PENG, Director General, BIISS, delivered the welcome address. There were two presenters: Dr Syeda Rozana Rashid, Professor, Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka; and Mr Md Mosharaf Hossain, Director General, East Europe and CIS, West Europe and EU, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh. Dr Kazi Maruful Islam, Professor, Department of Development Studies, University of Dhaka moderated and summed the session up.

Speakers discussed evolution, expansion and various aspects of Bangladesh-Italy bilateral relations. Italy’s support was crucial for the newly independent Bangladesh in securing UN membership. The country remains a reliable development partner of and among most sought-after destinations migrant workers from Bangladesh. Many Bangladeshi students and professionals go to Italy for higher education as the country is home to some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. Bangladesh-Italy cooperation also extends into security, law enforcement, and scientific fields. Speakers shed light on these and provided guidelines on how to advance the relationship further.

Senior officials from different ministries of Bangladesh, foreign diplomatic missions, media, businesspeople, teachers and students from various universities, researchers, representatives from various think tanks, international organisations, enthusiastically participated in the lecture and enriched it by presenting their valuable opinions, comments, insights, suggestions, and observations during the open discussion session.
